I just got back from a basketball jamboree that was up in Levelock. Because our school district is so small, we have to play co-ed which means boys and girls on one team instead of separate teams. I was still able to travel even though I was the only one on our team. I was able to play on Levelocks team and be a temporary viking. My teacher and I got stuck in Levelock one more day because of the weather here. It wasn't bad, he showed me around Levelock because he used to teach there and we were able to go to night gym.
Lately in Chignik, the weather has been warm. It hasn't felt like winter. But one day we had this really bad snow storm. It had gusts up to 70 MPH and constant wind around 30 MPH. I didn't go to school that day. What I did do instead was go out and salvage wood to start up the fire place. That consisted of me putting on carrharts, a fur hat, mukluks (fur boots), and a sweat shirt. I couldn't find my coat so I just ran and kept my back to the wind so I didn't get too cold in my sweat shirt. I would go out of my house, take shelter near a wall that wouldn't have any wind and when it died down a bit, I would run and hurdle over four foot snow drifts until I reached another little sheltered area. I would grab an empty box and fill it with lots of wood scraps and kindling. One of the trips I made, I grabbed a propane torch out of the shop, which made the process of lighting the fire so much easier.
After all that I would repeat the process to get the wood back into my house. I did that a few more times until I ran out of wood to find. Wood fires keep the house very warm for a long time and thankfully, I didn't get burnt when putting wood into the fire place.
I wouldn't say I was exactly smart sometimes. It'll be 20 degrees out and I'll run out to our "shop" in a tee shirt and sweat pants, which has most of our food in it. My mom would always get mad at me and say stuff about what if I fell or something. She makes sense but I'm too lazy. Haha
Anyways, something else that I would say that was interesting around here is the TV and internet. :P We have to have satellites for both. We are so far from "civilization" that we have to rely on dishes to get our internet and TV. I have four or five in my front yard. They're normal to me so I never really cared but they could be considered an eye sore. We don't get the greatest internet or TV but it's something.
